Civilian Traffic Investigator Unit Launched

The Raleigh Police Department (RPD) recently launched a new Civilian Traffic Investigator Unit. The unit responds to and processes data from crashes involving property damage on Raleigh streets, highways, and parking areas. This allows sworn officers to concentrate on other priority calls.

In the month of May, RPD responded to more than 1800 calls involving crashes, and in June, officers responded to 1700 crashes resulting in an average of 55.5 daily crashes. This approach to crash investigations will help RPD respond to all calls more efficiently and effectively for the nearly 500,000 Raleigh residents.

The unit is made up of three full-time and three part-time RPD employees and will operate with two full shifts, ensuring prompt responses.

The members of this unit completed six weeks of intensive training on proper procedures.

Join us in welcoming these new members to the Raleigh Police Department.
