Metropolitan launches application period for Apprenticeship Program with new, inclusive testing approach

Applications for the next class of Metropolitan Water District's popular Apprenticeship Program for mechanical and electrical technicians will be accepted starting Aug. 2, as the district launches an improved testing process to foster greater accessibility.

As part of a newly expanded recruitment process, applicants will now be able to book their own appointments for the program's required written test over a 10-day period at more than 150 locations across California, Arizona and Nevada. Previously, the test was held over three days at a single Southern California location.

"This more inclusive approach in our Apprenticeship Program reflects Metropolitan's unwavering dedication to fostering a workforce that mirrors the rich tapestry of our communities," said Metropolitan's Chief Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Officer Liji Thomas. "We recognize that inclusivity is not just a moral imperative but a strategic advantage, driving innovation, and excellence within our organization."

The district's decentralized testing approach aims to reduce barriers for potential applicants and create opportunities for a wider pool of candidates to access the program, Thomas added.

"We hope these changes better accommodate the diverse needs and circumstances of prospective applicants, ensuring a more equitable and accessible pathway into the apprenticeship program," Thomas said, emphasizing that all testing centers are standardized so that applicants get the same experience regardless of location. "

Led by two full-time instructors, the state-certified Apprenticeship Program is geared for mechanical and electrical operations technicians. Interested applicants are encouraged to apply quickly when the application period opens at 8 a.m. Aug. 2, as applications are limited to the first 750 applications received. In previous years, that number was reached within hours. Testing begins in mid-September, followed by interviews and physical testing in October. The next class of apprentices starts in early 2025.

Apprentices are considered employees of Metropolitan and are paid throughout the program and eligible for benefits. Apprentices who complete the four-and-a-half-year program, which includes required classroom and on-the-job coursework, earn a journey level certificate, 36 hours of college credit applicable toward an associate degree, and continued full-time employment at Metropolitan. Veterans Affairs GI Bill benefits also are available.
