Sarbanes Statement on the 50th Anniversary of Turkey’s Illegal Invasion of Cyprus

"Today marks the somber 50th anniversary of Turkey's brutal invasion of the Republic of Cyprus. In marking this dark day, we condemn Turkey's ongoing illegal occupation as a direct affront to Cypriot sovereignty, international law and the essence of democratic liberty."

"The United States can and must do much, much more to hold Turkey accountable and help secure the reunification of Cyprus. We must also continue to strengthen the longstanding partnership between the United States and Cyprus, recognizing the indispensable role Cyprus plays as a stabilizing and peaceful force in the region."
