Registered unemployment rises by 21,884 in August, the lowest increase for this month since 2016

The number of unemployed people registered in the offices of the State Public Employment Service (SEPE) at the end of August increased by 21,884 people (0.86%) compared to the previous month.

In seasonally adjusted terms, registered unemployment fell by 7,724 people.

Registered unemployment stood at 2,572,121, the lowest figure for a month of August since 2008.

Unemployment by economic sector

Registered unemployment fell in the Agriculture sector by 2,337 people (-2.60%), and among the group Without Previous Employment it decreased by 3,150 people (-1.33%). It increased in Services by 20,189 people (1.11%), Construction by 4,187 people (2.11%) and Industry by 2,995 people (1.50%).

Unemployment by sex and age

Female unemployment increased by 10,913 women (0.71%) to a total of 1,550,658. This is the lowest figure in the historical series for the month of August.

Compared to August 2023, female unemployment fell by 78,783 women (-4.83%).

Male unemployment increased by 10,971 men (1.09%) to 1,021,463 registered unemployed.

Unemployment among young people under 25 years of age increased in August by 2,186 persons (1.25%) with respect to the previous month and stood at 177,112, the lowest figure in the series in August.

The number of consecutive months of year-on-year declines is now 40.


Unemployment by autonomous community

Registered unemployment fell in August in four Autonomous Communities, with the largest falls in absolute numbers occurring in the Canary Islands (-443 people), Extremadura (-365 people) and La Rioja (-130 people).

Contracts

The total number of contracts registered in August stood at 1,040,159. Of this total, 389,735 permanent employment contracts were registered, 37.47% of all contracts.

The number of temporary contracts registered in August 2024 was 650,424, 19,480 (-2.91%) fewer than in the same month of the previous year.

Unemployment benefits in July

Existing beneficiaries at the end of the month were 1,804,488 (+1.4% y-o-y).

The coverage rate stands at 75.55%, the highest for a month of July since 2010.

The average monthly expenditure per beneficiary, excluding the agricultural subsidy in Andalusia and Extremadura, in July 2024 was €1,062.8, which represents an increase of €41.6 (4.1%) over the same month the previous year.

The total investment in benefits in July 2024 amounted to almost €1.9 billion.
