Han Qin, adjunct faculty in SBU's Department of Art

The Pollock-Krasner House and Study Center will launch its contemporary art series on July 12, with the exhibition "Little Images: Han Qin at the Pollock-Krasner House." Qin, adjunct faculty in the Department of Art at Stony Brook University, is a visual artist, researcher and art journalist based in Long Island, New York, and Hangzhou, China.

In this series, select artists will feature in exhibitions that respond to the intimate nature of the Pollock-Krasner House setting.

"I see our artists as house guests," said Director Matthew Ward, "For the run of their exhibition, this home becomes their home and the energies intermingle. As a venue, the Pollock-Krasner House presents a unique opportunity to explore themes like process and the artist's personal life in a really interesting way."

Han Qin's exhibitionexplores the concept of "home" as both a refuge and a restraint. Drawings, prints, videos and site-responsive installations illustrate the artist's search for belonging: personally, artistically and culturally. Taking inspiration from Lee Krasner's small-scale paintings of the 1940s, produced in her bedroom studio, this exhibition asks how works created under spatial, emotional and psychological stress might provide opportunities for beauty and self-discovery.

"I'm waiting for a day when my studio is not just a cave in the garage, but extends into every inch of living space" said Qin. "The boundary between life and art shouldn't exist. But at this stage, the 'young family' stage, it does. And so in this sense, my studio is a rejuvenating cave, where I can preserve and repair my soul when it is wearing thin."

Qin was the recipient of the 2023 NYSCA award for Film, Media, and New Technology and is a founding member of the U.S. Immigrant Artist Network and an Executive Committee member of the Chinese American Art Faculty Association.

A public reception will be held on Saturday, July 13, at 6 pm at the Pollock-Krasner House.
