Consultation on new Scheme for Community Councils

Shetland Islands Council is asking the public to come forward with their views on the third and final phase of consultation on a new Scheme for Community Councils in Shetland.

The consultation is now open until the end of January 2025, focussing on the details of a final draft amended Scheme. This includes proposals for a number of material changes to the way Community Councils work, including:

  • Creating a new funding mechanism based on remoteness, access to key services and population
  • Reducing the minimum age of Associate Membership category and developing closer links between Community Councils and existing youth forums and groups
  • Introducing new Standing Orders and a revised Code of Conduct

More details and a link to an online survey are available at www.shetland.gov.uk/ccschemereview Responses can be made until 5pm on Friday 31st January 2025.

Documents can also be viewed in the Council Headquarters at 8 North Ness, Lerwick, or at Shetland Library, Lower Hillhead, Lerwick, and at the Community Libraries based in Baltasound Junior High School, Brae High School or Mid Yell Junior High School.
