Treasurer Stacy Garrity and Rep. Kristin Marcell Return Nearly $20,000 in Unclaimed Property to Veterans

Southampton, PA - Treasurer Stacy Garrity and Rep. Kristin Marcell (R-178) today announced the return of nearly $20,000 worth of unclaimed property to Veterans in Bucks County following an event hosted by Rep. Marcell.

"I always love returning unclaimed property to its rightful owners, but the fact that all of this money is going back to my fellow Veterans is truly something special. I want to thank Rep. Marcell and her staff for helping to make these returns possible, and I encourage everyone to check if they have unclaimed property owed to them. And remember - unclaimed property doesn't just belong to individuals, it can also belong to businesses, nonprofits, or other organizations."

"I was honored to have Treasurer Garrity join us at our Veterans Appreciation Event. Our Veterans have sacrificed so much to protect our freedoms, and it's our duty to ensure they are recognized and supported. This event was a small way to express our gratitude, and I'm grateful for Treasurer Garrity's continued commitment to Pennsylvania's Veterans and their families."

A total of $19,150.92 was identified during the event on Sept. 26, hosted at Southampton Fire Company. Veterans were able to search for their unclaimed property with the help of Treasury's outreach staff. In total, 39 claims were found, including two large claims of $6,549 and $6,264.

Treasurer Garrity, a retired U.S. Army Reserve Colonel who served three deployments overseas, was surprised to see a familiar face at Rep. Marcell's event.

"Meeting fellow Veterans is one of my favorite parts of the job. But it's not every day that I run into someone I served alongside. It was a fantastic surprise to see my former commanding officer, retired Colonel Wendell Rich, and to remember our service during Operation Desert Storm, which was my first deployment back in 1991."

Unclaimed property can include things like dormant bank accounts, uncashed checks, forgotten stocks, insurance policies, and more. It can also include tangible items, such as contents of forgotten safe deposit boxes. In accordance with state law, businesses must report property to Treasury after three years of dormancy.

Treasury is working to return more than $4.5 billion in unclaimed property to more than one in ten Pennsylvanians. The average unclaimed property claim is worth about $1,600.

Treasury is also looking for the rightful owners of about 450 military decorations and memorabilia being safeguarded in Treasury's vault. Treasurer Garrity has returned 434 military decorations, including 11 Purple Hearts and three Bronze Stars. Anyone can search Treasury's database of military decorations to see if they can help find a Veteran or their family at patreasury.gov/unclaimed-property/Medals.
