Cricket volunteers celebrated as Mark Taylor Oval Indoor Cricket Centre wins at Cricket Australia awards

Hornsby Shire Council is delighted to announce the Mark Taylor Oval Indoor Cricket Centre has been recognised at the Cricket Australia 2024 Community Cricket Awards, winning Indoor Facility of the Year.

The success of the Mark Taylor Oval Indoor Cricket Centre, delivered in partnership with the Northern District Cricket Club, wouldn't be possible without the tireless work of the volunteers who create opportunities for players of all levels and ability.

The club is supported by approximately 40 dedicated volunteers who assist with everything from coaching to cleaning and maintenance of the Indoor Cricket Centre. Phil Melville, a member of the Australian Over 50s Cricket Squad has been volunteer coaching the 'all abilities' cricketers at the club for many years, providing opportunities for people will intellectual disability, such as autism and Down Syndrome, to participate in sport. He spoke about the significance of the new indoor centre for these players.

"It's very rewarding to coach these wonderful cricketers. Many have never played organised cricket when they first come, but they love having the structure here at the club. It certainly puts my old aches and pains into perspective when I see what these players with intellectual disabilities need to overcome. We're lucky to have this world-class facility on our doorstep in Hornsby Shire," noted Phil.

Formally opened in February 2023 by Hornsby Shire Council, the Mark Taylor Oval Indoor Cricket Centre in Waitara is the first of its kind in the region. It is used by men and women's cricket teams for all weather training and specialist coaching.

Mike Langford, a Club Committee member and member of the Indoor Centre Management Committee, said, "It's great to be part of a committee where we all enjoy each other's company and simply love getting things done. The indoor cricket centre is part of my life. Receiving the Cricket Australia award is an opportunity to celebrate the inclusive and thriving community we have helped to create."

The national award follows the success of Mark Taylor Oval Indoor Cricket Centre in the Cricket NSW awards in March where it won Indoor Facility of the Year.

"Congratulations to all the wonderful volunteers at the Northern District Cricket Club for the Indoor Facility of the Year award. Hornsby Shire Council is honoured to have upgraded these facilities and it's the dedication of the volunteers that instil the gift of sport every day," said Hornsby Shire Mayor the Hon Philip Ruddock AO.

Jeremy Hook, President of the Northern District Cricket Club thanked the volunteers for having an impact on many players' lives.

"The opportunity of these training sessions at our indoor cricket centre is life-changing for many players and it's thanks to the volunteers for giving their time and energy to make sure everyone is looked after and has a great time."

"The Northern District Cricket Club has been based at Waitara Park since its formation and celebrates its centenary in 2025. Winning this award has come at the perfect time," Jeremy continued.
