A volunteer from Jerome was honored for her service at the Idaho Capital for a Day event hosted by Gov. Brad Little, Thursday, Oct. 24.

Serve Idaho, the Governor's Commission on Service and Volunteerism, recognized Linda Helms with Idaho's Brightest Star Award for her exceptional volunteer service.

The Jerome County Historical Society commended Helms for her tireless efforts to preserve and share the unique history of Jerome, Idaho, through her volunteer hours at local historical societies.

"Several years ago, when our long-time museum curator passed away, Linda slipped into the spot immediately, so we were able to keep the museum in town open," Board Treasurer Shonna Fraser of the Jerome County Historical Society said. "She administers our volunteers and puts in untold hours mentoring the volunteers and overseeing ongoing tasks."

Helms has volunteered over 2,100 hours per year with the Jerome County Historical Society for the past 35 years. She primarily serves as a host at the Depot Museum and the Idaho Farm and Ranch Museum, where she assists visitors, documents historical newsletters and organizes student tours.

Helms also volunteers at the Jerome American Legion Auxiliary Unit 46, Friends of the Jerome Public Library, the Jerome Civic Club and Magic Valley Writers Inc.

Idaho's Brightest Star Award recognizes outstanding volunteers from across the state. It is a partnership between Gov. Little's office, Serve Idaho and the Idaho Nonprofit Center.
