City of Norfolk Rehabilitating E. Virginia Beach Boulevard Bridge Over Broad Creek

NORFOLK, Va. - The City of Norfolk is set to begin a major rehabilitation project on the E. Virginia Beach Blvd. Bridge over Broad Creek. Construction is set to begin on Nov. 12 and is expected to be complete by August of 2025.

This project will address key structural updates, improve pedestrian access and ensure long-term durability for one of the City's vital transportation routes.

The scope of work includes the removal of a portion of the bridge, sidewalk and railing. A new section of bridge and sidewalk will be recast in concrete and a new railing system will be installed to enhance both safety and visibility. A sealant will be applied to the concrete to protect the structure and extend its lifespan.

Traffic Impacts:

  • The outside eastbound lane will be closed for approximately five months.
  • The outside westbound lane will be closed for approximately five months.
  • During certain stages of construction, both outside lanes will be closed to accommodate the staging of a crane on the bridge for several weeks.

Motorists and pedestrians are advised to plan for potential delays. Electronic message boards will be in place prior to and throughout the project.

The City of Norfolk is committed to minimizing this project's impact on daily commutes while ensuring the bridge rehabilitation is completed efficiently and safely.
