Global humanitarian organisation CARE International joins ICI as a Board member

The global humanitarian organisation, CARE, has joined the International Cocoa Initiative (ICI) as a Board member. The organisation, established in the 1940s, works to save lives, defeat poverty, and achieve social justice.

"We are honoured to join the ICI Board and partner for a more sustainable cocoa future," said Balla Sidibe, CARE West Africa (WARMU) Region Director.

"The cocoa sector faces complex challenges, but by working together with ICI and other stakeholders, we can create a system that benefits all. Village Savings and Loans Associations (VSLAs) for example, have proven to be a powerful tool for empowering women and improving livelihoods in these communities. We look forward to sharing our expertise and collaborating on solutions that will make a real difference,"he continued.

CARE places special focus on working alongside women and girls around the world, understanding that gender equality is the key to overcoming poverty, a root cause of child labour. According to the organisation, its VSLA program has empowered millions through financial inclusion and economic opportunity.

ICI Executive Director, Matthias Lange, proudly welcomed the new Board member, "We are always happy to welcome new members and partners, as it means that that we're able to widen our reach and scale up our efforts to tackle child labour and forced labour in West Africa. An organisation like CARE, with their legacy, extensive experience, innovative projects and influence will help to amplify our collective impact for positive change."
