NEW: Detroit News: “U.S. Rep. John James failed to disclose 145 stock trades”

This weekend, Detroit News released a report on John James failing to disclose a whopping 145 stock trades, blowing through congressional ethics violations.

James' late disclosure could indicate "unethical behavior, such as… intentionally delaying submissions to obscure trades."

While financial disclosures provide essential information for Michigan voters, James chose to ignore the mandated deadline, disclosing the 145 stock trades with only weeks until Election Day.

DCCC Spokesperson Aidan Johnson:
"John James seems to believe that the rules don't apply to him and that Michiganders wouldn't notice. Voters in MI-10 deserve to know what other self-serving and possibly corrupt schemes James is trying to hide."

  • Michigan Republican U.S. Rep. John James failed to disclose 145 stock trades within the 45-day required time window set out in federal law, according to a Sept. 2 filing.

  • "This is a large number of transactions that were not reported on time," [Kedric Payne, vice president of the nonpartisan Campaign Legal Center] said, noting that James will need to pay a $200 fine as stipulated by the STOCK Act.

  • But Payne also said late disclosures can indicate unethical behavior, such as lawmakers intentionally delaying submissions to obscure trades they or their spouses make using insider information.

  • Rep. James, who is seeking re-election in his Metro Detroit congressional district, is set for a November rematch against Democratic challenger and former Macomb County Prosecutor Carl Marlinga of Sterling Heights.

  • James edged out Marlinga by 1,600 votes or 0.5 percentage points in 2022 to win Michigan's 10th District, which includes parts of Macomb County and a portion of Oakland County. The closeness of that race surprised Democrats nationally that year, and the party recently identified the seat as a top pickup opportunity.

  • "I'm proud of the momentum my campaign has gotten because people around here are sick and tired of seeing John James only looking out for himself and his donors," Marlinga said in an Aug. 15 statement to The News.

  • He added: "This community is looking for someone like me, a father and grandfather who's been devoted to serving the community his entire life and will focus on lowering costs on everyday items like groceries and prescription drugs, protect reproductive rights, and bring good jobs back."
