Explore New 'Discover and Learn' Series at the Library

August 22, 2024 - Come to the Grace A. Dow Memorial Library for a new lecture series called "Discover and Learn." The series begins with the "History of Piracy on the Great Lakes" on Wednesday, September 4 at 6:30 p.m. in the Library's Orchard Room. Speaker Chris Gillcrist, emeritus director of the National Museum of the Great Lakes, will provide a historical and cultural re-examination of piracy and its implications for understanding Great Lakes history.

The series continues on Friday, October 25 at 6:30 p.m. on the Library's Mezzanine with "Cryptids Decrypted." Speaker Andrew Kercher will discuss a history of curious cases when mysterious creatures turned out to be all too real! Everyone knows famous Cryptids like Bigfoot or the Loch Ness Monster, but there are many more mysterious creatures around the world. From not-so-extinct fish to animals now common to zoos, hear the stories of animal demystification.

The series concludes with the "Mystery of November Storms" in the Library's Auditorium on Friday, November 8 at 6:30 p.m. Author Ric Mixter will share rare interviews with storm survivors and spellbinding underwater video surrounding the worst gales of November from 1905 to 1975.

Registration is not required for any of these programs. To see additional Library events, please visit the Library Calendar at gadml.librarycalendar.com.
