FARGO, N.D. - Sanford Health Fargo is hosting a community breakfast on the emerging technologies in artificial intelligence (AI) and robotics.

The forum takes place on Wednesday, Oct. 23, from 8 to 9 a.m. at the Lights Event Center, 360 32nd Ave W., West Fargo. The event is available to attendees by invitation only. The community breakfast will include a brief presentation, followed by a panel discussion and a question-and-answer session with the audience.

Featured panel discussion members include:
Dr. John Bassett, gastroenterology, GI Genius
Dr. Venkatkiran Kanchustambham, pulmonology, Ion technology
Dr. Alexander Drofa, neurosurgery, ExcelsiusGPS
Dr. Mentor Ahmeti, trauma surgery, Da Vinci 5

"As technology has continuously changed, it's been imperative that we meet that change to provide the communities we serve with world-class health care close to home," said Dr. Steven Briggs, Sanford Health chief medical officer. "Sanford Fargo's ability to be a leader of technologies in health care is largely thanks to our physicians, who recognize the significance of these advancements and advocate for the investments to be made for our patients."

Nearly 25 years ago, Sanford Fargo became the first organization in the region to use a robotic surgical system. Since then, Sanford Fargo has continued to prioritize investments in advanced technology, including AI. In 2000, Sanford Fargo received its first Da Vinci robotic surgical system, the 14th device distributed worldwide and recently integrated the Da Vinci 5 robot into day-to-day operations.

Sanford Fargo was the first in the region to utilize the following robotic and AI surgical assistants:
• ExcelsiusGPS, used for spine and cranial procedures
• ROSA: Assists knee replacements and offers faster recovery times
• Ion technology: A robotic-assisted platform to enhance the detection of lung cancer
• GI Genius: Uses AI to help physicians detect potentially pre-cancerous polyps during a colonoscopy.
