Alberta Transportation reopens Highway 881

Alberta Transportation has reopened Highway 881 in both directions.

The highway had been closed from kilometre 213 to kilometre 241 north of Janvier, due to nearby wildfire LWF-136 and other wildfires in the area. This closure was to ensure the safety of motorists and to allow emergency personnel to respond to the wildfires.

Conditions and visibility have improved and as a result, Alberta Transportation has reopened the road today (July 18) as of 1:35 p.m. Road users should expect reduced visibility and traffic delays.

The safety of travelers is top priority. Alberta Transportation continues to monitor the situation and motorists are advised to check Alberta 511 before travelling as conditions can change quickly and be aware that the highway may close with short notice.

An Evacuation Alert has been issued for the hamlet of Janvier, due to nearby wildfires, LWF-136 and LWF 142. Chipewyan Prairie First Nation has also issued an Evacuation Alert. If you are in the Janvier area, stay alert and be prepared to evacuate on short notice.

At this time, an Evacuation Order has not been issued. This is an alert for residents in the Janvier area to be ready to leave on short notice. There are no reception centresset up at this time.

Motorists are advised to stay informed of further updates through official channels and adhere to all road safety guidelines on Alberta 511.
