Two miles of newly constructed Garfield Road opens in Macomb County

Road extension project anticipated to improve traffic flow, ease congestion and enhance road network efficiency

MOUNT CLEMENS, Mich. - The Macomb County Department of Roads (MCDR) announced that work on the newly constructed extension of Garfield Road between 23 Mile Road and 25 Mile Road in Macomb Township is complete and the road is open to traffic. The new Garfield Road will enhance safety, improve traffic flow and ease congestion throughout the corridor and the region.

"Macomb County takes a complete approach to managing our transportation network by identifying infrastructure needs, making strategic investments and maximizing our community partnerships to enhance our roadways," said Macomb County Executive Mark A. Hackel. "We will continue to work with our local communities to strengthen our transportation infrastructure and advocate for the funding we need to strengthen and enhance Macomb County's roads, bridges and transportation network."

The $8.27 million project included building a new road that connects 23 Mile Road and 25 Mile Road, traffic light installation, new drainage infrastructure, utility modifications, and restoration work. The total construction cost included $3,308,000 from MCDR and $4,962,000 from Macomb Township.

"Garfield Road is an important corridor in Macomb Township that provides much needed north and south access through Macomb County. The extension of Garfield Road will ease congestion and improve the safety and efficiency of Macomb County's transportation network," said MCDR Director Bryan Santo. "The Garfield Road project is part of our ongoing commitment to improve the quality and longevity of our transportation assets while enhancing safety, optimizing efficiency and delivering a smooth traveling experience for all road users."

The first phase of the $4.5 million Garfield Road extension project between 22 Mile Road and 23 Mile Roadwas completed on time and on budget in 2023. The total construction cost included $1.8 million from MCDR and $2.7 million from Macomb Township.

"We're very excited to have another main road that connects our north and south borders. With every completed road project, our community gets a little bit safer and less frustrating to travel through," said Macomb Township Supervisor Frank Viviano. "Opening Garfield is a big step forward for Macomb Township, but we know there are many more ahead of us. We look forward to working with the Macomb County Department of Roads on future improvements in our Township."

Through strategic investment in corridors of significance and through data driven transportation asset management planning, MCDR has completed multiple construction and pavement preservation projects along the Garfield Road corridor since 2020.
