Gov. Kemp appoints Lanier Sims Interim Chair

NEWTON COUNTY, GA - Lanier Sims was appointed Interim Chairman of the Newton County Board of Commissioners by Gov. Brian Kemp on Aug. 30, 2024.

The appointment was effective immediately and he will be sworn in the week of Sept. 2, at which point the former District 2 Commissioner (2011-2019) will be responsible for all duties of Newton County's Chair.

"I am deeply humbled to announce that Governor Brian Kemp has appointed me to serve as the interim chairman of the Newton County Board of Commissioners," Sims said."This is not a role I take lightly, and I am extremely grateful for the many calls, prayers, and words of encouragement I've received from our community. I am committed to serving with integrity and ensuring that our county remains strong, united, and prosperous during this transition."

Together, we will continue building #OneNewton. As we move forward, let's 'remember that "when we work together, there is no challenge too great, and no goal out of reach.' Our unity and shared goals will guide us in this journey.

Sims appointment follows the suspension of Chairman Marcello Banes by Kemp on Aug. 1, 2024, as a result of a review of the June 11, 2024 Federal Grand Jury Indictment.

The suspension of Banes will remain in effect until either the final disposition of the criminal case or the end of the current term, whichever comes first.

During this time, Sims will be responsible for all powers and duties vested in the chair as outlined in the County's Enabling Legislation, including presiding over board meetings and working with County Manager Harold Cooper to set the agenda for each meeting.

Vice-Chair Edward's will lead the Board of Commissioners' Tuesday, Sept. 2 meeting.

"I look forward to working with each and every county commissioner, city official, constitutional officer, county employee, and resident," Sims said. "Your support means everything to me, and I am honored to serve in this capacity for the community I love so dearly."
