Joliet Junior College Introduces Addictions Counseling Program

Joliet Junior College (JJC) has added an addictions counseling program to its list of over 180 degrees and certificates. This program will equip students with the skills and knowledge needed for a career in addiction treatment.

JJC's program prepares individuals to effectively address and treat various forms of addiction. It covers substance use and emerging areas of concern in addiction counseling such as gambling, social media, eating and shopping addictions. This broad approach provides students with a comprehensive understanding of addiction and its many forms.

Students will earn an associate degree in applied science, which provides a streamlined pathway to certification and further education. The associate degree accounts for 1,000 of the 4,000 supervised work hours needed to take the Certified Alcohol and Other Drug Counselor (CADC) exam, a requirement for practicing counselors.

"The addictions counseling program at JJC is comprehensive. It covers various forms of addiction and provides students with a solid foundation in counseling techniques, ethical considerations and real-world applications," said Heidi Munsey, program coordinator. "It is designed to meet the growing demand for qualified addiction counselors to address the diverse needs of those struggling with addiction in our communities."
