Below is this week's congressional update by BakerHostetler's Federal Policy team. We'll continue to post in weeks when both chambers of Congress are in session.

HEADLINES

  • Washington is reacting to an apparent second failed attempt in recent months on the life of former President Donald Trump, while he played golf Sunday at Trump International Golf Club in West Palm Beach.
  • Meanwhile, Congress is working to pass legislation to fund the government beyond the expiration of current appropriations on September 30.
  • President Joe Biden will host the leaders of India, Australia, and Japan for the Quad Leaders Summit.

HOUSE

  • The House plans to be in session tomorrow through Friday, attempting again to pass government funding legislation after Republican leaders could not muster enough support last week.
  • The House Small Business Committee on Wednesday will hold an oversight hearing with Small Business Administrator Isabel Casillas Guzman.
  • Also Wednesday, the Foreign Affairs Committee will hold a hearing titled "Great Power Competition in the Indo-Pacific" with Deputy Secretary of State Kurt Campbell.

SENATE

  • The Senate will be in session throughout the week.
  • The Judiciary Subcommittee on Privacy, Technology, and the Law will hold a hearing tomorrow on the regulation of artificial intelligence.
  • Wednesday, the Senate Commerce Committee will hold a hearing on aviation cybersecurity threats.

WHITE HOUSE

  • This afternoon, Biden will speak at the National HBCU Week Conference.
  • Wednesday, the president will host a White House reception celebrating National Hispanic Heritage Month.
  • Saturday, he will host the fourth in-person Quad Leaders Summit in Wilmington, Delaware.
