Today, Governor Mike Dunleavy transmitted the Fiscal Year 2025 state operating and capital budgets, maintaining the $4 million appropriation approved by the State Legislature to fund operations at the E. 56th Ave. low-barrier shelter. Assembly Chair Christopher Constant and Assembly Members Felix Rivera and Anna Brawley express their gratitude with the following statement:
To the Governor, the State Legislature, and the municipal staff and community partners who came together to shelter our most vulnerable neighbors, we thank you.
The $4 million state appropriation matches the Municipality's commitment to operating a low-barrier shelter at E. 56th Ave. and ensures we keep our doors open through the end of this year. The investment marks an important turning point in the way Alaska addresses the housing shortage and behavioral health crisis in the state.
We know that Anchorage is home to 40% of the state's population and serves more than 60% of people experiencing homelessness in Alaska. Homelessness is a statewide issue that warrants a statewide response; this investment reflects that the Municipality of Anchorage and the State of Alaska are in it together.
