Whitecap and Gypsy Bridge Project Update

CORPUS CHRISTI, TX - At the January 23 TIRZ#2 Board meeting, funding was authorized to retrofit scour protection countermeasures to the Whitecap and Gypsy bridges. These measures will protect soil and other submerged material against erosion. On February 20, the City Council passed an ordinance amending the Capital Improvement Plan to include a scour protection project for the bridges with a budget of $1,500,000.

The City has continually monitored both bridges. Although some scour has been observed, it has not reached the maximum depth of the bridge abutments. The bridge structures remain intact and are safe for motorists and boaters.

The scour protection project at the Whitecap and Gypsy Bridges is set to begin Monday, July 1, and is expected to take 30 days to complete. Navigation under the bridges will be restricted during construction, but vehicular traffic crossing over the bridges should experience minimal impacts.
