Killeen Fire Department to host Open House for Fire Prevention Week

City to also hold Flyer Prevention Flyer Contest for Killeen ISD students in 3-6 grades

For the fourth year in a row, the Killeen Fire Department is inviting the community out to an Open House event to discuss fire safety and prevention tips and participate in demonstrations.

The event is Saturday, Oct. 12, from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Central Fire Station, 201 South 28th Street. This event is part of the annual national Fire Prevention Week which runs from October 6 to October 12 and aims to educate the community on fire safety and prevention.

The event is free and open to the public. Attendees will have the opportunity to meet and greet with Killeen firefighters as they educate the community. There will also be basic first aid tips provided, an obstacle course for youth, vehicle tours and demos including helicopters, a demonstration on how quickly a fire can spread, a visit from Sparky the fire dog, and much, much more.

All activities are weather permitting.

This year, in conjunction with Fire Prevention Week, the City is hosting a Fire Prevention Flyer Contest for Killeen ISD students in grades 3 through 6. This contest encourages students to creatively illustrate the 2024 Fire Prevention Week theme, "Smoke Alarms: Make Them Work For You," emphasizing the importance of functioning smoke alarms in homes.

Prizes include lunch with Fire Chief James Kubinski, a ride to school in a firetruck, a certificate, and a commemorative coin. One winner will be chosen from each grade level, and winners will be announced in November.

Entries must be hand-drawn on 8.5" x 11" paper and include the student's name, age, school name, parent's name, and parent's phone number. Entries may be dropped off Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Killeen City Hall (101 North College Street), Central Fire Station (201 South 28th Street), Copper Mountain Branch Library (3000 South WS Young Drive) or the Killeen Main Library (205 East Church Avenue) or scanned copies may be emailed to [email protected].
