Rep. Judy Chu Honors Local Leaders at 2024 Congressional Leadership of the Year Awards Ceremony

ARCADIA, CA - On Saturday, July 20, Rep. Judy Chu (CA-28) held her annual Congressional Leadership of the Year Awards Ceremony to honor local leaders and groups in the San Gabriel Valley who have contributed to their communities through service and leadership. The Congressional Leadership of the Year Awards is an annual event recognizing the diverse leadership and volunteerism in the cities making up California's 28th Congressional District. Each of the awardees were selected from nominations submitted by members of their community. The selected groups and individuals received this honor because of the commendable work they have accomplished in their field, as well as their dedication to communities in the San Gabriel Valley.

"To be nominated for this distinction is a true testament to the tremendous impact each of these leaders have had on our friends, neighbors and fellow citizens,"said Rep. Chu. "I want to congratulate all our honorees once again for the incredible work they have accomplished throughout their lives, and over the course of your careers you have helped strengthen our families, support our youth, care for our seniors, and uplift our communities during difficult times. Each of them are heroes that carry us through difficult times and easy times alike."

The 2024 honorees are:

  1. Brandon Tsay - Courageous Service Award

    Brandon Tsay demonstrated exceptional bravery on January 21, 2023, by disarming the Monterey Park mass shooter during Lunar New Year celebrations. His heroism has been recognized by national figures, including President Joe Biden and California Governor Gavin Newsom. Brandon continues to advocate for mental health resources in minority communities through the Brandon Tsay Hero Fund in partnership with the Asian Pacific Community Fund. His ongoing efforts to support mental health initiatives underscore his commitment to community well-being and resilience.

  2. Community Activists of the Year - The San Gabriel Valley (SGV) LGBTQ Center

Founded in 2011, the SGV LGBTQ Center has been a cornerstone for over thousands of LGBTQ+ individuals in the San Gabriel Valley, providing vital services and organizing impactful events. Under the leadership of President Camila Camaleón and Vice President Christian Port, the Center focuses on Queer and Transgender people of color, offering programs that empower youth and promote understanding of LGBTQ+ issue. The Center's innovative initiatives and community engagement have fostered a more inclusive and supportive environment for all.


  1. Educator of the Year - Lori Touloumian

Lori Touloumian, Principal of Marshall Fundamental Secondary School, has significantly contributed to educational leadership in Pasadena. With a 97% graduation rate under her leadership, Lori has introduced innovative programs like "Summer SOAR" and has revitalized arts programs. Her dedication extends beyond academics, serving on various committees and co-founding the Women's History Month Celebration. Lori's passion for education and her unwavering commitment to student success have made her an exemplary leader and advocate for youth development.

  1. Volunteer of the Year - Ed Donnelly

Ed Donnelly, a multi-instrumentalist and recording engineer, has dedicated himself to community service through various roles, including co-founding the D.U.D.E.S. organization and serving on the South Pasadena Public Safety Commission. His commitment to fostering educational and social opportunities, alongside his professional achievements, exemplifies his volunteer spirit. Ed's leadership and enthusiasm have made a lasting impact on his community, enhancing local events and educational programs.

  1. Building Bridges Award - Randy Lopez

Randy Lopez CEO of the Claremont Chamber of Commerce has devoted his career to weaving together community knowledge, small business development, advocacy, and healing. His leadership has transformed the Chamber into a hub for Claremont, supporting local businesses and organizing major events like Village Venture. Randy and his wife Beatrice also founded Ophelia's Jump, a non-profit theater company that champions diversity and inclusion. Overcoming personal battles with cancer, Randy has become a nationwide spokesperson for colon cancer awareness and continues to support those battling the disease. His dedication to bridging communities and fostering growth makes him a true pillar of strength and connection in Claremont.

  1. Non-profit of the year - Flintridge Center

The Flintridge Center in Pasadena is dedicated to breaking the cycle of poverty and violence through community-driven programs. Focused on helping formerly incarcerated individuals reintegrate into society, their construction training program has been particularly impactful. By providing sustainable and lucrative union careers, the program boasts a 70% employment rate within a year and a recidivism rate of just 10%, far below LA County's average of 47%. The Flintridge Center's innovative approach and commitment to supporting vulnerable populations have profoundly impacted the lives they serve, making them a beacon of hope and transformation in the community.

  1. Non-profit of the Year - Cancer Support Community Greater San Gabriel Valley

The Cancer Support Community (CSC) of Greater San Gabriel Valley has been a source of strength for thousands of people across the region for more than three decades. CSC offers vital and free psychosocial supportive care to patients, their caregivers, and cancer survivors annually. Through professionally facilitated support groups, educational workshops, and healthy lifestyle classes, CSC helps families and individuals navigate the challenges of cancer, providing emotional support and practical resources to improve their quality of life.

  1. Businessperson of the Year - Joey Galloway

Joey Galloway and his family own and operate Summit Enterprises, a diverse portfolio of residential and commercial properties. Joey has taken a visionary role in managing these properties, focusing on revitalizing the Altadena community. His efforts are most evident in the transformation of Mariposa Junction, a commercial block that now hosts significant community events like the Altadena Chamber of Commerce's "Sip & Shop" and the Mariposa Junction Night Market. These events have become vital in supporting local businesses and fostering a strong community spirit. Joey's personal connection to Altadena, coupled with his commitment to restoring its vibrancy, is reflected in the successful introduction of popular venues such as Amara's Kitchen and the upcoming Bernee restaurant. Through his leadership and dedication, Joey is enhancing the commercial landscape and nurturing a renewed sense of community pride.

  1. Youth of the Year - Sophia Lee

Sophia Lee, a senior at La Cañada High School, has made a remarkable impact through her non-profit organization, Omid for Girls. Motivated by the educational restrictions imposed on girls in Afghanistan, Sophia established an online tutoring program to support Afghan girls seeking education. Her initiative has connected over 250 American tutors with Afghan students, providing them with crucial educational resources and hope. Sophia's dedication to empowering young women despite significant challenges demonstrates her extraordinary leadership and commitment to global advocacy.
