ERO Newark arrests Mexican national wanted for manslaughter in Mexico

NEWARK, N.J. - Enforcement and Removal Operations Newark and members of the U.S. Marshals Service's New York-New Jersey Regional Task Force arrested a Mexican national July 17 wanted in Mexico for voluntary manslaughter.

"This is another great example of ERO working with our law enforcement partners to arrest a long-wanted fugitive who poses a danger to the community at large," said ERO Newark Field Office Director John Tsoukaris. "We would like to thank the United States Marshals Service for their help in making this arrest possible."

Mexican authorities issued an arrest warrant July 12, 2013, for the Mexican national for voluntary manslaughter, who faces a maximum penalty of 22 years in prison.

The U.S. Border Patrol encountered the Mexican national July 12, 2013, as he entered the United States unlawfully. Border Patrol officials processed him as an expedited removal on July 12, 2013, ordered him removed to Mexico on July 13, 2013, and removed him on that same date.

The Mexican national unlawfully reentered the United States at an unknown location and on an unknown date. He voluntarily departed the United States Dec. 21, 2021, on a flight from Houston, Texas, to Acapulco, Mexico.

He unlawfully reentered again at an unknown location and on an unknown date. An Interpol Red Notice was issued April 30, 2024, indicating that he was wanted for the crime of voluntary manslaughter in Mexico.

He remains in ICE custody.

Noncitizens placed into removal proceedings receive their legal due process from federal immigration judges in the immigration courts, which are administered by the Executive Office for Immigration Review. The EOIR is an agency within the U.S. Department of Justice and is separate from the Department of Homeland Security and U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement. Immigration judges in these courts make decisions based on the merits of each individual case. ICE officers carry out the removal decisions made by the federal immigration judges.

As one of ICE's three operational directorates, ERO is the principal federal law enforcement authority in charge of domestic immigration enforcement. ERO's mission is to protect the homeland through the arrest and removal of those who undermine the safety of U.S. communities and the integrity of U.S. immigration laws, and its primary areas of focus are interior enforcement operations, management of the agency's detained and non-detained populations, and repatriation of noncitizens who have received final orders of removal. ERO's workforce consists of more than 7,700 law enforcement and non-law enforcement support personnel across 25 domestic field offices and 208 locations nationwide, 30 overseas postings, and multiple temporary duty travel assignments along the border.
