For the fourth time, the IGF-D and its Secretariat invited representatives of the various stakeholder groups to the Jimmy Schulz Dinner in Berlin in October. It took place at the restaurant '1687' under the auspices of Tabea Rößner, Chairwoman of the Digital Committee. The focal topic was the UN Cybercrime Convention with Alexander Seger, Head of the Cybercrime Division of the Council of Europe, as keynote speaker. The Council of Europe is responsible for the Budapest Convention (Convention on Cybercrime), which served as a blueprint for the UN Convention.

UN Cybercrime Convention - a danger to digital human rights?

The negotiations on the UN Cybercrime Convention, which lasted about three years, only came to an end last August when the United Nations Ad Hoc Committee on Cybercrime unanimously adopted it. The UN Cybercrime Convention has created the first international legal framework for cyber crime. For some time, it not necessarily seemed possible to come to a unanimous decision. After the negotiations failed this February, some clauses remained extremely controversial all through the unscheduled extension of them - and they still are. Civil society, in particular, still sees serious deficiencies in the Convention that pose a threat to the protection of digital human rights.

Around 30 representatives of the German Internet Governance Community came together to discuss the UN Cybercrime Convention. Members of the stakeholder groups of business, parliamentarians and academia also had prepared statements on the speech of Alexander Seger. DENIC as sponsor of the dinner series once again was represented by the DENIC Board members Tom Keller and Andreas Musielak.
