Camden County Post-Hurricane Helene Update

As Camden County continues its recovery from Hurricane Helene, several key updates are being shared with the public to assist in the transition back to normal operations. Though significant progress has been made, we are still facing challenges, including power outages, some blocked roads, and communication disruptions. Please continue to prioritize safety as county services gradually resume, and know that every effort is being made to restore normal operations as quickly as possible.

The following updates provide essential information on available services and ongoing recovery efforts:

State of Emergency:
Both Camden County and the State of Georgia remain under Declarations of Emergency as recovery work continues.

Government and School Closures:

  • Due to ongoing outages of cable, internet, phone, and/or power, government offices in Camden County, Kingsland, St. Marys, and Woodbine remain closed to the public. Only essential personnel are on-site to support internal recovery operations. All public-facing services will remain unavailable until further notice.
  • Camden County Schools will also remain closed on Monday, September 30, 2024. Further updates will be provided by the Camden County Board of Education as more information becomes available.

Shelter Closing:
The Public Safety Authority (PSA) Shelter will close today, September 29, 2024, at 4:00 PM. Moving forward, faith-based organizations and the American Red Cross will support displaced residents in their efforts to return home.

Ongoing Power and Communication Outages:
Unincorporated areas and cities in Camden County are still experiencing widespread power and phone outages, which may hinder residents' ability to communicate and access essential services. It's crucial to stay informed during this challenging time. Georgia Power and Okefenoke Rural Electric Membership Corporation (OREMC) offer outage viewing tools that provide real-time updates on outages and restoration progress within their service areas.

Staying updated will help ensure your safety and preparedness as recovery efforts continue.

Landfill and Curbside Collection Services:
The Camden County Landfill has resumed normal operating hours, and curbside collections remain on schedule without delay. Residents can expect regular trash pickup as services are fully operational.

Debris Removal:
Residents in unincorporated Camden, Kingsland, and St. Marys may place separated debris (yard waste, appliances, construction materials, etc.) along the right-of-way for removal, starting Tuesday, October 1, 2024. All debris must be separated and in the following categories: appliances, construction material, hazardous waste, electronics, and vegetative yard debris. Please be aware that residential yard debris drop-off at the Old Still Road site will no longer be available after 5:00 PM on Monday, September 30, 2024.

Commercial Debris Removal:
Businesses must dispose of debris directly at the Camden County Landfill following proper guidelines.

Road Closures and Blockages:
In some areas, trees remain on powerlines and some roads are still blocked. Various traffic signals are still inoperable. Residents are urged to use caution when traveling.

We extend our sincere thanks to the community for your continued patience and cooperation as we work together toward a full recovery from Hurricane Helene.
