UW-Parkside’s Mathis Gallery to Host Faculty Exhibition

Kenosha, Wis.- The University of Wisconsin-Parkside is thrilled to announce the inaugural UW-Parkside Faculty Exhibition from Sept. 4 to Nov. 15, in the Emile H. Mathis Gallery located in the Rita Tallent Picken Regional Center for Arts & Humanities. This exhibition will showcase the talents of UW-Parkside's art department faculty members Lisa Marie Barber, Trenton Baylor, Tom Berenz, Lindsey Larsen, Dan Martin, and Carey Watters.

The Emile H. Mathis Gallery is open Tuesday through Friday, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The community is invited to the opening reception on Sept. 18 from 4-6 p.m. for an opportunity to meet the artists and engage with their work. There is also an Artist Talk scheduled for Sept. 18 at 2 p.m. in Bedford Hall. These events are all free and open to the public.

About the Artists

Originally from Tucson, AZ, Lisa Marie Barber is a full Professor in the department of art and design at UW-Parkside. Barber's aesthetic sensibility is rooted in Latino Folk Art and the Mexican Catholic shrines of her heritage and upbringing. Deliberate with showcasing the "handmade" quality of her work, she uses low-tech methods to create large assemblage ceramic sculptures and installations, as well as mixed media quilts and clothing. In addition to exhibiting numerous times nationally, she has held several Artist-in-Residence positions and has led workshops across the country

Trenton Baylor, from Milwaukee, WI, received a bachelor's degree in art and certification to teach art (K-12) from UW-Parkside in 1996 and an MFA from UW-Madison in 1999. Currently an associate professor at UW-Parkside, he teaches sculpture, digital fabrication, woodworking, and furniture design. His work reflects an interest in the beauty of the natural world, as well as the contrasting elements of architecture, machinery, and man-made objects. Baylor's work is exhibited nationally.

Tom Berenz, an associate professor of painting and drawing at UW-Parkside, abstracts figures from contemporary cartoons, pop art, and pop culture, reworking them into acrylic on canvas paintings informed by cubism and 20th-century masters. Berenz has been featured in multiple publications, was named a Mary Nohl Fellow in 2017, and has his work is in many public collections.

Lindsey Larsen is an Assistant Professor of Graphic Design, Photography, and Printmaking at UW Parkside. Based in Milwaukee, she is also co-founder of WHAT-THAT, a collective graphic arts studio.

Daniel Martin is a graphic designer by training and a visual artist by necessity. Martin has produced graphic design work for international professional and sporting organizations, social justice collectives, and individual cultural and commercial clients. His experimental design practice centers on data-driven works where algorithmic chance produces combinations of colors and patterns for intriguing visuals; these works have been exhibited nationally. He is originally from the Upper Peninsula of Michigan and currently resides in Kenosha.

Carey Watters, is a professor of art and design at UW-Parkside. She received her MFA from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in printmaking and book arts. Watters has been working as a professional graphic designer since receiving her BFA in graphic design from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee in 1999. Her paper-works weave together concepts regarding feminism, historic map-making, and religious and pagan symbolism. Her work is influenced by her travels and her research of architecture, design, and religious reliquaries.
