CANYON, Texas - The West Texas A&M University Alumni Association will again host a holiday food drive to combat food insecurity among WT students.
The "Fuel the Herd" drive will run from Dec. 11 to 18, gathering nonperishable food items for The Market on Tierra Blanca, a Canyon food bank at St. Helen's Outreach, an arm of St. Ann's Catholic Church.
Donors can drop off their items at Buffalo Courts on the WT campus in Canyon or at Harrington Academic Hall WTAMU Amarillo Center, 720 S. Tyler St.
Purchases also may be made on Amazon and shipped to the Alumni Association. To view the wish list, visit bit.ly/WTAlumFoodDrive24.
Additionally, the Canyon-Amarillo WT Alumni Chapter will host a happy hour at 6 p.m. Dec. 12 at Buffalo Courts. Admission is free with a nonperishable food item.
The donations will be shelved in a section at The Market designated for WT students.
The Market opened in January and has since served more than 300 WT students, as well as hundreds of others in the city.
"By contributing to 'Fuel the Herd,' you are investing in students' lives and providing hope to those facing difficult times, reminding them they are not alone," said Ronnie Hall, WT Alumni Association executive director. "We all know life can be tough at times, but each can, each box of food, and each donation makes a meaningful impact on students struggling to overcome financial hardships."
According to Feeding Texas, Texas has the second-highest rate of food insecurity in the nation at 16.9%, more than 4.5% higher than the U.S. average. In Texas, 1 in 6 households are food insecure. More than 1.9 million families-including approximately 5.1 million Texans-are at risk for hunger.
WT's values are reflective of and responsive to the people the University serves, as laid out in the University's long-range plan, WT 125: From the Panhandle to the World.
That plan is fueled by the historic One West comprehensive fundraising campaign, which reached its initial $125 million goal 18 months after publicly launching in September 2021. The campaign's new goal is to reach $175 million by 2025; currently, it has raised more than $160 million.
