2nd Festival of the st̓əč̓as (Steh-Chass)

On Saturday, August 17th, the Squaxin Island Tribe and the Deschutes Estuary Restoration Team (DERT) are joining forces for the 2nd Festival of the st̓əč̓as (Steh-Chass) to celebrate the cultural and ecological importance of the decision to remove the 5th Avenue dam and restoring the estuary in Downtown Olympia.

Enjoy a packed day at Heritage Park of workshops, vendors, tabling, and performances. Highlights include an address by Squaxin Island Tribe Chairman Kris Peters and a morning of inter-tribal cultural exchange, followed by an afternoon of poetry by the 6th Washington State Poet Laureate Rena Priest of the Lhaq'temish (Lummi) Nation, storytelling by Squaxin Island Museum Director Charlene Krise, and musical performances by Suquamish hip-hop fusion artist Calina Lawrence and Ts'mysen rock artist Saltwater Hank. The afternoon will also feature hands-on environmental workshops with the likes of Metamimicry, South Sound GREEN, and Squaxin member and scientist Shawnell McFarlane. At 5:30 pm, the day culminates in a Healing of the Waters Ceremony by the 5th Avenue dam.

Festival of the st̓əč̓as coincides with the 50th anniversary of the Boldt Decision's signing and the 30th anniversary of the last Healing of the Waters Ceremony in Budd Inlet, highlighting the intersections between ecological restoration and the health of water, salmon, and culture.

Azucar: A Latine Cabaret Experience
Azúcar returns to Olympia on September 7, 2024 just in time for the sixth anniversary of our first show and we are delighted to welcome you to our new home: The Kenneth J Minnaert Black Box located in the South Puget Sound Community College campus. Come celebrate with us!

Azúcar, a Latine Cabaret Experience is the first documented all-Latine burlesque-focused showcase in Olympia and the state of Washington. Azúcar is more than a burlesque and variety show: Loosely inspired by Latin American afternoon talk shows, our mission is to create an innovative entertainment experience that welcomes all by showcasing and centering Latine talent from across the Pacific Northwest. At Azúcar we seek to inspire and foster meaningful cultural connections before, during, and after each show.

Thanks to Inspire Olympia- a fund that was made possible by local voters and is supported by local tax dollars, we are able to share our art in a fully accessible space for patrons and performers alike. This is a huge milestone not only for Azúcar, but for BIPOC artistry!

Latina K Presents and Azúcar are fiscally sponsored by Shunpike, arts non-profit empowering artists through equitable access to vital expertise, opportunities, and business services. Harlequin's 2025 Announcement and Gala to take place on August 17

The Olympia Timberland Library and the League of Women Voters of Thurston County are thrilled to welcome Quin'Nita Cobbins-Modica to the library for this special Humanities Washington presentation.

The dominant narrative about Washington State is that it's an "exceptional" place rather than a microcosm of the larger U.S. society. How do Black women's stories challenge this understanding? What are the long-standing systemic inequalities in the state?

Quin'Nita Cobbins-Modica (she/her) is a historian and educator whose research, teaching, and writing focus on the history of Black women, social activism, and politics in the American West.
