Open House Showcasing Water Wells, Water Line in North River Valley Park Set for Sept. 18

AMES, Iowa - An open house to share information about water wells under construction at North River Valley Park will be held from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 18 at the Ames Water Treatment Plant, 1800 E. 13th St. A brief program about the project will be held at 5:15 p.m. The public is encouraged to attend, learn more about the project, and ask questions.

The Water and Pollution Control Department is adding two new water wells to its current inventory of 22 wells to provide drinking water to Ames residents. The wells, located on the northern edge of North River Valley Park, will be connected to the Ames Water Treatment Plant through underground pipes that will also include fiber optic communication for well controls.

To ensure the wells remain functional whenever needed, electric connections from the well pumps to a standby generator at the Ames Water Treatment Plant will be completed as part of this project. The entire project is anticipated to be completed by the end of October 2025. The City has contracted with Keller Excavating to complete this project. During the construction, visitors to North River Valley Park should stay out of the construction zone.

"The Water and Pollution Control Department is adding wells to ensure Ames has an adequate source and quantity of water to be treated to provide quality drinking water. This project will ensure our ability to continue providing water to a growing Ames population," said Environmental Engineer Daria Dilparic.

The Ames Water Plant is a conventional lime softening facility with a capacity of 15 million gallons per day. The facility serves customers within the Ames corporate limits and includes Iowa State University.
