In June, Interim Provost Mike Malone announced a total of 15 teams of faculty and librarians from across the UMass Amherst campus have been awarded Interdisciplinary Research Grants (IRGs) and Large-Scale Integrative Research Awards (LIRA) for 2024. Ten teams were awarded IRGs and five teams received LIRAs.<_o3a_p>

Interdisciplinary Research Grants are offered to teams of UMass Amherst faculty and librarians from at least two different schools/colleges with the goals of empowering creativity, strengthening the campus' areas of interdisciplinary excellence, promoting equitable collaborations and attracting external funding and other forms of recognition across our colleges and schools. The grants are offered in two categories: up to $20,000 or up to $50,000.<_o3a_p>

The Large-Scale Integrative Research Awards are for faculty teams to develop equitable collaborations aimed at large-scale initiatives that require substantial external funding. The program provides professional consultations to awarded teams on integrative teaming, equitable collaboration, and budget planning and offers research development support for ideation and proposal development. LIRA grants are offered in two categories: up to $30,000 or up to $60,000.<_o3a_p>

The IRGs and LIRAs are internal funding opportunities that support research and creative activity by faculty and librarians offered through the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research and Engagement and Seed Funding for Strategic Research Initiatives offered through the International Programs Office.<_o3a_p>

"These programs are an integral part of how the university facilitates collaboration across a wide range of academic areas," Malone said. "These well-deserved recipients will have the opportunity to innovate with colleagues in new ways, charting paths in research and leading the way to extraordinary scholarly contributions."<_o3a_p>

Malone announced the call for IRG and LIRA proposals in February in partnership with the deans from all schools, colleges and libraries. The funded projects were selected from a total of 38 project submissions.<_o3a_p>
