Bangor Police Chief Hathaway honored with top award

BANGOR, Maine - Police Chief Mark Hathaway was awarded the 2024 Ethel N. Kelley Memorial Award during the Maine Municipal Association's 88th Annual Convention on Wednesday evening.

The award was created in 1986 to not only commemorate MMA's 50th anniversary, but also to honor the award's namesake, Ethel Kelley, who held municipal government service in high regard.

Hathaway, who has 37 years of experience in law enforcement, began his career as a patrol officer in Veazie before joining the Biddeford Police Department. Two years later he returned to Penobscot County, joining the Bangor Police Department, where he worked his way through the ranks before being named chief in 2013.

In a letter recommending Hathaway for the award, Bangor City Council Chair Cara Pelletier credited Hathaway for his "commitment to and advocacy for ensuring his department provides the most appropriate response to a call for service, and that the response is delivered by well-trained and equipped individuals ... He is an outstanding and resilient manager who works tirelessly to ensure his department is reflective of our community's goals."

Hathaway has been described as a dedicated and accomplished community leader; praised for his commitment to improving the lives of others, particularly people struggling with mental health issues; credited for his ability to lead his department through chronic staffing shortages; and lauded for his commitment to community-oriented policing.
