Job opportunities at the European AI Office for Legal and Policy backgrounds

The Commission has opened two calls for expression of interest to recruit new members for the European AI Office. Apply now as Legal or Policy Officer for an opportunity to shape trustworthy AI.

Previously, the European AI Office had launched its first job opportunities already in March, with calls for Technology Specialists and Administrative Assistants which are currently undergoing recruitment.

With the present calls, we are now searching for social science profiles as Legal and Policy Officers. New colleagues would join one of the following Units: AI Excellence and Robotics, AI Regulation and Compliance, AI Safety, AI Innovation and Policy Coordination or AI for Societal Good.

As the EU centre of AI expertise, the European AI Office plays a key role in implementing the AI Act - especially for general-purpose AI - fostering the development and use of trustworthy AI, and international cooperation. The AI Office stands at the forefront of global AI policy and innovation, established within the European Commission, as part of DG CONNECT.

Working with us presents a great opportunity for motivated individuals to contribute significantly to shaping trustworthy AI in Europe and beyond. We are implementing the AI Act as the world's first-ever comprehensive legal framework on AI.

The team works closely with Member States, regulatory authorities and other bodies with relevant expertise as well as relevant third countries and international organisations.

A candidate for the Policy Officer position should possess a minimum of three years of experience in EU digital policies, strong analytical and research skills, as well as the ability to translate findings into actionable policies.

The role entails various responsibilities, such as contributing to the formulation of policies and procedures for EU AI policy, monitoring the development of AI markets and technologies, as well as collaborating with stakeholders to collect knowledge and evidence for the implementation of AI policies. Policy Officers will also contribute preparing policy papers, briefings and different policy events. The main purpose of this position to navigate political challenges and ensure a comprehensive understanding and implementation of AI policies in the EU and beyond.

A candidate for the Legal Officer position should hold a minimum of three years of experience in EU digital legislation and excellent analytical and communication skills. They must have a comprehensive understanding of legal issues related to AI and the EU AI Act. Additionally, it is essential to have practical experience in drafting and reviewing legal documents, guidelines, decisions, and other relevant acts for the AI Office. Experience in standardisation would be advantageous.

The responsibilities of this role include contributing to the preparatory phase of implementing the AI Act by developing evidence-based approaches, guidelines, and analytical frameworks. Collaboration with third parties to gather knowledge and evidence for the application of the AI Act is also an essential task. The candidate will work to ensure the effective implementation of the AI Act's rules, including secondary legislation, guidelines, codes of practice, codes of conduct, or relevant standards.

Next to other eligibility criteria, applicants must be citizens of a Member State of the EU. The initial duration of contract is one year, with the possibility to extend it up to 6 years in total. Both positions belong in Function Group IV. Applicants must register themselves under a correct profile in the EPSO CAST webpage.

Interviews should be held Early 2025 (tentative). The start of employment could be expected from Spring 2025.

Find indicative information about salaries. Net pay includes basic salary plus allowances and benefits, subject to community tax, exempt from national tax. Staff may be eligible to an expatriation allowance.
