GBI Investigates Officer Involved in Henry County

The GBI is investigating an officer involved shooting in Henry County, GA. On August 27, 2024, the Henry County Police Department requested the GBI conduct an independent investigation. One man died in the incident. No officers were injured in the incident.

Preliminary information indicates at about 11:50 a.m., members of the U.S. Marshals Southeast Regional Fugitive Task Force and the Henry County Police Department were located at a home on Linden Lane, Stockbridge, Georgia to arrest Derrick Rankin, age 33, of Atlanta, who was a fugitive wanted for murder in Atlanta. As officers arrived at the home, they observed Rankin and approached the house to make the arrest. A shot was fired from the home, wounding one member of the Marshals Task Force. Officers returned fire as they evacuated the injured officer. The Georgia State Patrol SWAT Team was requested to the scene. Troopers deployed tear gas into the house and went in to locate Rankin. Rankin was eventually found in the attic of the home with at least one gunshot wound and in possession of a rifle. Rankin was removed from the attic in order for medical personnel to attempt treatment, but it was determined that Rankin was dead.

Rankin will be taken to the GBI Crime Lab for an autopsy.

The GBI will conduct an independent investigation. Once the investigation is complete, it will be given to the Henry County District Attorney's Office for review.
