Apply to 911 Training Academy!

If you like helping others, consider joining the Raleigh-Wake Emergency Communications Center team! The application period for the next training academy takes place July 8 - Aug. 4, 2024. The 12-14-week long academy is scheduled to start on Thursday, Sept. 19, 2024. The application form is available now.

After their applications have been reviewed, qualified candidates will be invited to an employment skills test. The test uses the CritiCall software, which measures several job‐related skills. They include data entry, typing speed and accuracy, spelling, and reading comprehension, along with several others.

If the applicant receives a passing score in the test, they will have a virtual interview with a panel. The candidates who receive a recommendation from the panel will move on to a psychological evaluation. They will also need to pass a criminal background check and complete some other steps.

Basic Training to Become Call Taker or Telecommunicator

During the Academy, trainees receive basic training to become call takers or telecommunicators. Trainees will receive a salary during training (a call taker's annual salary is $41,203 and a telecommunicator's annual salary is $44,358).

The basic job duties include answering incoming emergency (911), non‐emergency, and administrative calls. Responsibilities include obtaining needed information from the callers and entering that data into a computer-aided dispatch (CAD) system.

The Raleigh-Wake Emergency Communications Center provides 911 services to a general population of more than 1.19 million people.
