Green Prisons Research Initiative: Call for Experts

The United Nations Interregional Crime and Justice Research Institute (UNICRI) and Penal Reform International (PRI) have launched the "Green Prisons Research Initiative" a comprehensive project aimed at exploring and promoting sustainable environmental practices within prisons and enhancing rehabilitation opportunities for prisoners, thereby supporting broader social and ecological benefits.

We are seeking experts to contribute their knowledge and experience to this initiative and serve as members of our Expert Working Group.

Please note that this is a voluntary position with no remuneration, but your contribution will be duly acknowledged in the report.

About the Green Prisons Research Initiative

The primary goal of this research initiative is to systematically explore the practices of 'green prisons' that promote environmental sustainability across various regions and countries, with an emphasis on identifying geographical disparities.

Key Objectives:

1. Environmental Impact: Investigate initiatives that have positively impacted the environment and increased efficiency within prisons in all regions. This includes, but is not limited to, examining lighting upgrades, recycling programmes, efficient materials flow, reduction of toxins, composting practices, and food dehydration techniques aimed at minimizing pulp waste. This also involves determining the level of knowledge that prisons possess regarding their environmental impact and any related policy or regulation in place.
2. Rehabilitation Enhancement: Explore initiatives that enhance the rehabilitation of prisoners, with a focus on environmental sustainability. Primary areas include gardening, horticulture (landscaping and green roof gardening), environmental stewardship education, nature and animal care, and green job training programmes that provide pathways to employment in the green economy, for example.

Who Can Express Interest?

The Expert Working Group will be multidisciplinary, with members possessing a range of technical knowledge, skills, and experience relevant to the study. Approximately 15 experts will be selected. UNICRI and PRI welcome expressions of interest from professionals across various disciplines relevant to the project, including but not limited to:

• Environmental Science
• Sustainability Studies
• Rehabilitation Programs
• Public Policy
• Energy Efficiency
• Waste Management
• Circular Economy

Role of the Expert Working Group

The Expert Group will assist by:

• Identifying case studies
• Advising on modes of dissemination and application
• Capturing the impact of changes in practice, policy, and outcomes for people in these landscapes
