DPM Koprivica lays wreath at monument commemorating the Battle of Vučji Do

Deputy Prime Minister for Political System, Judiciary, and Anti-Corruption Momo Koprivica laid a wreath on behalf of the Government of Montenegro at the monument dedicated to the Battle of Vučji Do, marking the 148th anniversary of this historic event.

The Battle of Vučji Do encapsulates centuries-old ideals of freedom and justice, which, through persistent and steadfast pursuit, secured Montenegro's statehood, its international legal status, and its legal order. This renowned and celebrated battle showcased not only an unwavering desire for freedom but also demonstrated exceptional military tactics and the extraordinary bravery of Montenegrin and Herzegovinian warriors, led by Prince Nikola. Remembering Prince Nikola, Petar Vukotić, Bajo Bošković, Peko Pavlović, and Jolo Piletić, along with the courageous brigadiers and honorable fighters, we recall their chivalry, love of freedom, ethics, and respect for international wartime laws and customs-a significant achievement rare in the world at that time.

The Battle of Vučji Do not only strengthened the foundations of the state and paved the way for its full international recognition but also fostered a sense of national pride that has endured for centuries. It demonstrated that when united in the pursuit of freedom and the common good of Montenegro, we can overcome all obstacles and elevate ourselves to the heights of historical glory. This unity, built through the struggle to establish the state and sealed 80 years before Vučji Do during the time of Saint Peter of Cetinje, created a state, political, and defensive community, and laid the groundwork for modern institutions and the legal order.

As we celebrate the Battle of Vučji Do, it is our duty to remember the "Proclamation of Prince Nikola to the Herzegovinians of Both Faiths" from June 1876, which declared equality, brotherhood, and reconciliation as the highest values foundational to the state. Prince Nikola's promise to Muslims that "in free Herzegovina, you will live freely. The law will be one and the same for everyone, and fair for all. No one will interfere with your faith as a sacred right" laid the cornerstone of legal equality, interfaith understanding, and tolerant policy. Enjoying the freedom won by the sacrifice of these glorious liberators, it is our duty to preserve and embody these principles as an invaluable historical legacy.

Montenegro must comprehensively enhance its relationship with this illustrious chapter of its history and work diligently to uphold the timeless principles that won this battle and cemented its statehood.

Glory to the heroes of Vučji Do! Long live Montenegro!
