House Passes Scalise Legislation to Expand Atchafalaya National Heritage Area

December 3, 2024

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Today, the United States House of Representatives passed H.R. 6843, legislation authored by House Majority Leader Steve Scalise (R-La.), to include Lafourche Parish, Louisiana, in the boundaries of the Atchafalaya National Heritage Area.

"Stretching across 14 parishes in Louisiana, the Atchafalaya National Heritage Area protects our region's storied culture and resources. From Cajun music to Zydeco to our bayous and abundant natural resources, Louisiana has unparalleled culture and heritage and is home to some of the most unique and special landscapes in the world.

"I'm proud to lead the effort with my delegation colleagues to ensure that Lafourche Parish - the only parish in the historic boundary area that is left out of the original designation - is finally included in this National Heritage Area. This bill corrects a long overdue oversight that will complete the Atchafalaya National Heritage Area, and I am pleased to see it pass the House today,"said Leader Scalise.

What Louisiana leaders are saying:

"I'm pleased to see Leader Scalise's legislation to modify the Atchafalaya National Heritage Area to include Lafourche Parish pass the House to raise awareness for the cultural and historical significance that our parish brings to the designation," said Lafourche Parish President Archie Chaisson, III.

"Lafourche Parish is rich with natural resources and a vibrant cultural identity that are integral to our Atchafalaya story. I applaud Leader Scalise's leadership to modify the Heritage Area's boundary and strengthen the vitality of our communities in the Atchafalaya National Heritage Area," said Atchafalaya National Heritage Area Executive Director Justin K. Lemoine.
