Police Investigate Bomb Threat at Fort Collins Transit Center

Released on Tuesday, August 6, 2024

At approximately 11:20 a.m. on Tuesday, August 6, 2024, Fort Collins Police Services (FCPS) received a report of a bomb threat at the South Transit Center in Fort Collins, CO.

Just before noon on Tuesday, a man disembarked from a Transfort bus, placed three bags on the platform, and then reported to a nearby security guard that one of the bags contained a bomb. Transfort security notified FCPS, who activated the Northern Colorado Bomb Squad immediately to investigate. Staff at the transit center terminated operations and the railroad and pathways around the transit center were closed as a precaution, as well as the transportation entrance at Fossil Boulevard.

Patrol officers quickly located the suspect near the transit center and took him into custody without incident. The bomb squad investigated the suspicious bags and processed the scene for additional incendiary concerns. The investigation revealed no explosive materials. The suspect has been booked into Larimer County Jail on the following charges:

· Class 5 Felony - False Report of Explosives

· Class 2 Misdemeanor - Hindering Transportation

The investigation proceeded for approximately six hours. For public safety, a nearby commercial building and a construction site directly adjacent to the transit center were requested to evacuate while the bomb squad investigated the scene. A train remained stationary at a crossing near Prospect Road, but there were no railroad crossing closures that resulted from the bomb threat investigation.

No other information is available at this time as the matter is still an active investigation.

A special thank you for all the responding agencies: Northern Colorado Bomb Squad, Poudre Fire Authority, Xcel Energy, Federal Bureau of Investigations, UCHealth, Transfort staff, and the Burlington-Northern Santa Fe railroad.

All charges are merely an accusation by law enforcement and the suspect must be presumed innocent until proven guilty in court.
