UMGC offers top-tier academic programs that are ideally suited for busy professionals, including professional baseball players. "We are excited to team up with the MLBPA and invest in the continuing education and development of its member players and their families," said Blakely Pomietto, UMGC's senior vice president and chief academic officer. "Many players transition to decades-long careers after their time on the field. With an academic portfolio of career relevant programs aligned with workforce needs, and faculty with extensive experience working specifically with busy adult learners, UMGC is proud to support players' life-long success through education."

The Major League Baseball Players Association is the union that represents players on 40-man Major League rosters, as well as approximately 5,500 Minor League players employed by the 30 MLB teams.

"Partnering with the University of Maryland Global Campus is a game-changer for our players and their families," said Chris Singleton, MLBPA special assistant for player resource programs and former major league outfielder. "The collaboration reflects the association's commitment to helping our members grow both on and off the field. UMGC's proven success in supporting adult learners makes it the perfect partner to help our players and their families build a strong future well beyond their playing days."

The partnership between UMGC and the MLBPA supports players' ambitions beyond their athletic careers, contributing to their personal development and preparing them for diverse professional paths. By extending these educational benefits to players' families, the initiative underscores a commitment to building a supportive and educated community that values learning and advancement.

The alliance with UMGC gives all players the opportunity to take courses from any of the university's more than 125 online degree and certificate programs, in fields such as business, management, data analytics, and information technology and cybersecurity.

In addition to waiving the application fee, the university also offers digital course materials that eliminate the need for costly publisher textbooks in most courses. Players' spouses and dependents are also eligible for the UMGC educational benefits under the alliance.
