Sgt. Washington-Sanders honored for arrest of armed robbery suspect

Please join NCPD in congratulating Sgt. Abril Washington-Sanders, who earned a Certificate of Recognition for June 2024. On June 7, detectives identified a possible suspect involved in an earlier armed robbery at a gas station on Dorchester Road. Officers located the suspect's vehicle parked at their home, and a perimeter was set up. Patrol, K-9 units, and detectives started summoning the suspect out of the house.
Sgt. Washington-Sanders arrived and began researching phone numbers for the suspect. She contacted the suspect's mother, who came to the scene. Officers learned the suspect was possibly near Northwoods Mall, waiting for a bus. North Patrol units responded to the area to search for him.
During the incident, Sgt. Washington-Sanders re-established a connection with the suspect, who demanded officers leave his home. Sgt. Washington-Sanders used her experience as a negotiator and kept her composure. The suspect became calm and unknowingly provided small details about his location. That information was passed on to patrol units, who found the suspect at a gas station on Rivers Avenue.
It was Sgt. Washington-Sanders' exceptional ability and fantastic work that directly led to the arrest of the suspect.
