State Route (SR) 36 (Woodland Road)) over Jerry Reeves Creek New Proposed Detour PIOH

Thomaston, GA - The Georgia Department of Transportation (Georgia DOT) will begin the widening project on State Route (SR) 1/US 27/Hamilton Road.

The proposed project will replace the existing culvert located on SR 36 (Woodland Road) over Jerry Reeves Creek with a 155-ft long by 39.1-ft wide bridge that meets current design standards. The proposed bridge is anticipated to be replaced at nearly the same profile as the existing roadway and may be raised slightly to accommodate bridge deck drainage, roadway design speed, and hydraulic opening. The roadway and bridge feature two 12 ft lanes and six-foot shoulders. The project will detour traffic off-site during construction and replace the bridge in its existing location. The total length of this project area would be approximately 0.2 miles.

The detour will utilize State Route SR 3/US 19, SR 22/US 80,and SR 41 to move through traffic around the closed bridge on SR 36. The net detour length will be approximately 42 miles for a net length increase of approximately 24 miles. The original route through SR 36 is approximately 18 miles. The SR 3, SR 22, and SR 41 detour segments are 15.6, 18.6, and 7.8 miles respectively.

A previous off-site detour was approved on 3/27/2024 using a 35.2 mile detour. The detour utilizing State Route 41, 85, & 74 was changed due to load rated bridges on the detour. The bridges are deemed not suitable to accommodate the additional SR 36 detour truck traffic.

Additional considerations have been given to local traffic; local traffic is expected to use a 6.6-mile detour around the project area . The local detour uses Sunnyside Rd, SR 74, South Old Alabama Rd, and Roland Rd. Trucks will be required to utilize the 42-mile state route detour.
