Since the end of last season, the Junior Bundesligas are no more. In the 2024/25 campaign, the newly founded DFB-Nachwuchsliga will get under way. It will start with eight regional groups containing eight teams each and will then split into Liga A and Liga B following the first phase. The DFB finalised the allocation of the groups in the middle of the week.

The Borussia Dortmund U19s will take on FC Schalke 04, Fortuna Düsseldorf, MSV Duisburg, RW Essen, Preußen Münster, SV Meppen and TSV Meerbusch home and away in Group C of the first phase. The BVB U17s are in Group B alongside Arminia Bielefeld, Hannover 96, SC Paderborn, Preußen Münster, SV Meppen, Werder Bremen and VfL Osnabrück.

From February 2025, the teams that finish between first and third place in the table will then continue in Liga A with 24 teams, which will be spread across four groups of six clubs. Following 10 rounds of matches, the four best teams in each group will then qualify for the round of 16 of the German Championship. From this point on, progression from each round will be determined by only one match. The final of the German Championship at U19 level is scheduled for 19 May 2025, and for 15 June 2025 for the U17s.

The clubs who do not make the leap into Liga A in the first round will go into Liga B for the second half of the season. There they will be joined by the 11 best teams from the second-highest divisions below the DFB-Nachwuchsliga. In order to give the talented youngsters designated as \"reserve players\" more minutes, the coaches in the DFB-Nachwuchsliga can make up to seven substitutions per game (six outfield players plus a goalkeeper).

Six group games in UEFA Youth League

The U19s will play their first competitive match of the season on 3 August. The first round ends at the start of December. The U17s will get under way on 10 August. The first matchday of the DFB-Junioren-Vereinspokal takes place at the end of August, with the last 16 and quarter-finals at the start of October and November respectively. The final is scheduled for 23 May 2025.

In addition to the DFB-Nachwuchsliga and the DFB-Pokal, Borussia's U19s will be in action in the UEFA Youth League. Mike Tullberg's team will participate in Europe's elite junior competition from 17 September to 11 December - in parallel to the first team in the Champions League - with a new format involving three home and three away games. The best 22 clubs in the table will then qualify for the round of 32.
