U.S. Route 54 bridge rehabilitation project scheduled to move to final phase of construction

Several ramps in Jefferson City will be closed

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. - Significant progress on the rehabilitation of the U.S. Route 54 overpasses over U.S. Route 50 and McCarty Street in Jefferson City means the second and final phase is about to begin, and that will bring changes to the traffic through the work zone.

Currently, both directions of traffic are using the eastbound lanes while the westbound bridge is rehabilitated. The week of Sept. 16, construction crews plan to switch traffic to the westbound lanes to allow for work on the eastbound overpass bridges. The switch will take place over several days and motorists are asked to slow down, use extra caution, and have patience when travelling through the work zone.

During this phase of the project, for the safety of motorists, three ramps will be closed:

  • Eastbound U.S. Route 54 ramp to U.S. Route 50.
    • Alternate route: Take the eastbound U.S. Route 54 ramp to Business U.S. 50 (Missouri Boulevard), then east to U.S. Route 50.
  • Missouri Boulevard ramp to eastbound U.S. Route 54.
    • Alternate route: Continue on Missouri Boulevard to westbound U.S. Route 50 then use the ramp onto eastbound U.S. Route 54.
  • Westbound U.S. Route 54 to West Main Street.
    • Alternate route: Use the westbound U.S. Route 54 ramp onto McCarty Street.

As with the first phase, traffic delays on U.S. Route 54 could stretch for several miles at peak daily commute times and weekend travels. All work is weather permitting and schedules are subject to change.

Concrete Strategies, LLC, began the rehabilitation project on July 15, and they were given 90 days to rehabilitate both the westbound and then eastbound bridges. The joint deterioration on the westbound bridges was more extensive than anticipated, however the project is still expected to wrap up in October.
