On Thursday, the City of Abilene's Street Maintenance Advisory and Appeals Board finalized their recommendation to the Abilene City Council for approximately $9 million in street projects for calendar year 2025, including the full rehabilitation of some areas within the city limits.
The projects recommended by the board at Thursday's meeting builds on almost $40 million of previous street projects approved since the City began collecting a Street Maintenance Fee in 2019. The fee is paid by Abilene citizens who reside or do business within the city limits.
"The City is committed to improving our roadway infrastructure throughout the City," said Max Johnson, Director of Public Works.
"We must evaluate all roadway types to include residential streets, collectors, and arterial roadways as we progress with our street infrastructure improvements," Johnson said Thursday. "We have made significant gains over the past several years, and we know the City has a lot more work to do in the future. We are in a marathon when it comes to our overall street maintenance and repairs. We have a very good pace at this point, but we also have a very long race."
In 2024, a total of $8.12 million in street projects were approved by the City Council, amounting to 23.9 lane miles of roadway. For reference, Abilene has approximately 1,784 lane miles of roads within the City Limits.
