Jayapal Statement on DOJ Effort to Rein in Google

SEATTLE, WA - U.S. Representative Pramila Jayapal (WA-07) released the following statement following the Department of Justice's (DOJ) filing of proposed remedies, including a potential breakup of the company to address their monopolistic practices:

"I applaud the Biden-Harris Administration and DOJ for its robust efforts to enforce our antitrust laws. DOJ proved in court that Google is a monopoly that uses its power to enrich shareholders while making products worse for consumers and small businesses.

"DOJ's comprehensive remedy framework - including potential structural separation - to address Google's search monopoly is an important and necessary development.

"During the House Judiciary Committee's 16-month investigation of Big Tech corporations in the 116th Congress, we reviewed nearly 1.3 million documents, consulted with 60 experts, held 10 hearings, and interviewed over 240 market participants, as well as former employees of the investigated platforms, and other individuals. We saw Big Tech monopolies like Google use their market dominance to pick winning and losing businesses, further entrench their own power, set arbitrary rules, and break them as they saw fit to crush competitors and continue to dominate the market.

"Aggressive action to rein in monopolies, like the remedies proposed by DOJ, is essential if we are to protect consumers, promote innovation, and ensure a competitive economy."

The DOJ filed a proposed remedy framework on October 8 outlining several potential options to limit Google's monopoly power.
