Why should I go?

Whether you're a lifelong fan of Shakespeare's work or haven't dabbled in the world of theater quite yet, you'll find that the Commonwealth Shakespeare Company's free performance of The Winter's Tale is a perfect opportunity to see a classic play in Boston's most iconic green space. The CSC's Shakespeare on the Common series-modeled after New York City's Shakespeare in the Park festivals-is entering its 28th season.

The Winter's Tale is a classic Shakespeare comedy (though some consider it a tragicomedy), filled with scandal, romance, and a hint of magic. It begins when King Leontes accuses his dear friend King Polixenes of Bohemia of engaging in an affair with Leontes' pregnant wife, Hermione. After a failed attempt to poison Polixenes, Leontes imprisons his wife, who gives birth to their daughter, Perdita, in captivity.

We won't spoil the rest, but The Winter's Tale, though not one of Shakespeare's most well-known plays, is sure to surprise you. We recommend bringing a blanket and snacks, as the performance, at five acts, won't be short-but will definitely be worth it. The play is directed by Bryn Boice, CSC associate artistic director, and stars Nael Nacer as Leontes, Marianna Bassham as Hermione, and Omar Robinson as Polixenes.
