Hoyer Statement on the 23rd Anniversary of 9/11

WASHINGTON, DC - Congressman Steny H. Hoyer (MD-05) released the following statement today to commemorate the 23rd anniversary of the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001:

"Each year, on September 11th, we remember the emotions we felt on that terrible day 23 years ago: the fear, the uncertainty, the grief. We mourn the 2,977 Americans who were killed in Al Qaeda's devastating terror attack. But we also remember the solidarity we felt as a nation that day. We recall the pride and gratitude we felt for the brave first responders who charged up thousands of stairs and ventured into the flames, as well as the passengers on United 93 who gave their lives to save others on the ground - likely right here in our Capitol. That day, Americans across the country and freedom-loving people around the world stood together and stood strong.

"We must continue to stand united as we fulfill our sacred obligation to care for the families of those who lost their lives because of that day as well as the first responders - many of whom were from Maryland - who have suffered long-lasting health complications because of their courageous service on September 11th. That's why as House Majority Leader in 2019, I brought legislation to the Floor to reauthorize the 9/11 Victims Compensation Fund in perpetuity and worked with Democrats and Republicans to pass it.

"The terrorists who attacked America that day thought they could break America's resolve and divide its people. We did the opposite. Let us continue to show the world that freedom, justice, and democracy are stronger than repression, fear, and terror."
