Making the public aware of projects

Highway projects big and small have been part of what ADOT does since our inception in 1974. Notifying people about those projects is also a big part of the agency's work.

ADOT adheres to a Public Involvement Planfor making the public aware of projects. But, when looking at this flier from the 1970s that we found in our archives, things sure have changed over the decades. The flier shows a proposed crossing of the Colorado River on Interstate 8 between Yuma and Winterhaven, Calif. You can see the model of that crossing in the photo below.

Today, ADOT's Community Relations group creates and distributes written project notifications across the state. These notifications are sent out at least two weeks before work starts. Residents and businesses within a mile of a project area receive postcards giving them a project overview, map, basic information on what to expect and how to contact ADOT. Anyone can sign up to receive emailed updates about projects of interest here.

Other notices with more specific project information are created and distributed both by hand canvassing and via email. And that's not all! ADOT also uses news releases, media interviews and social media to inform the public of projects.
