Nov. 7 and 8
This meeting will cover topics such as public-private partnerships for space missions, the future of space communication, and high-energy physics, and feature presentations from leaders and scientists from the U.S. Department of Energy, NASA, and the National Science Foundation.
The U.S. Army requires subject matter experts and a robust research community to develop a steady, forward-thinking stream of technologies and integrate them into mission capabilities. This meeting will kick off a new study reviewing and evaluating relevant Army programs to develop the next generation of capabilities necessary to avoid technological surprises.
Nov. 12 and 13
Adoption of AI in recent years has spurred significant construction and investment in new data centers and cloud computing. These data centers require large-scale continuous power, posing challenges for local electric grids and broader climate goals. This workshop will explore how to map, measure, and mitigate these impacts, consider regional implications for data center siting, and more.
Nov. 13
The L'Oréal USA For Women in Science program celebrates women in STEM who are making a difference with groundbreaking contributions across various fields. Awardees in 2024 will present their cutting-edge research and the impact of their work on society, and share their personal journeys as women in science.
Nov. 14
The first in a series, this webinar will discuss recent initiatives on integrating sustainability and decarbonization efforts into health care, early lessons and findings, and potential next steps.
Nov. 14
This meeting will bring together experts in science, technology, and policy to tackle pressing challenges of flood management. The agenda highlights cutting-edge data and technology, novel solutions and strategies, and planning for the future.
Nov. 15
This symposium will bring together social, behavioral, and economic experts and state and local decision-makers to discuss the cumulative impacts of COVID-19 investments, the benefits of cross-sector collaborations, and explore how the social sciences can contribute to transforming preparedness for future crises.

The pandemic exacerbated preexisting disparities in childhood immunization rates among different groups, highlighting the need for a multifaceted approach that incorporates systems-level changes and strategic partnerships that support effective interventions at the clinical practice, individual, and family levels. This webinar will share strategies from the social and behavioral sciences to support routine childhood immunizations highlighted in a recently published Guidance on Routine Childhood Immunizations.
Nov. 18 and 19
This symposium will explore issues at the intersection of engineering and human rights to increase awareness of the role engineers play in protecting and promoting human rights. Goals of the symposium include exploring ways rights-based approaches to engineering might help engineers and human rights experts solve pressing challenges.
Nov. 19-22
This meeting will feature discussions with leaders and scientists from NASA, the European Space Agency, the U.S. Space Force, the U.S. Department of Energy, the National Science Foundation, and other agencies, covering topics including spectrum management, space weather, the New Horizons mission, science and technology strategies, and recent National Academies reports.
Nov. 20
This webinar will explore changes in how airports, rail and bus stations, and other transit centers are being planned, built, and managed as factors such as telework change user expectations. Presenters will focus on key trends and showcase facilities across the U.S. that are employing effective practices.
Nov. 20
Geothermal energy is a promising source of global carbon-free, affordable power and heat, but barriers to widespread deployment remain. Advancing geothermal energy involves addressing technical, economic, and regulatory challenges to fully leverage its broad range of capabilities. This meeting will bring together experts to address these challenges and future opportunities to advance these efforts.
Nutrient needs often change as people age. This webinar will explore what optimum health and nutrition looks like in aging, and food and nutrition access for older adults.
Nov. 21
This webinar will explore how injectable medications (GLP-1s) - primarily used for the treatment of diabetes - work for weight loss, their potential for treating chronic disease, and their broader societal impacts.
Nov. 21
This workshop will discuss promoting research that more effectively incorporates sexual and reproductive health considerations, the feasibility of conducting research, and challenges and opportunities related to data resources and validation.
Nov. 21
This webinar will focus on how to effectively use and analyze limited datasets to arrive at useful solutions. Experts will discuss how they define "limited" or "small" data including the number of data points and variables considered.
Reports Scheduled for Release in November
Release dates for reports and proceedings from the National Academies depend on successful completion of the review process and publishing schedules. Reporters who would like to be notified when a report is due for release should contact the Office of News and Public Information (e-mail [email protected]) and ask to be placed on a contact list.
Women's Empowerment, Population Dynamics, and Socioeconomic Development
Women contribute to social and economic development as workers, mothers, and political actors. Discussions of social and economic development should include women's empowerment as a key component. This report examines the impact of women's empowerment and associated population dynamics on social and economic development. The report reviews the current state of knowledge, critically assesses policy options, and sets an agenda for future research.
